Unhooked the battery now it turns starts then stops
JA: Will the headlights turn on? Is the battery fully charged?
Customer: yes the lights turn on and I have the charger on it not fully charged
JA: What is the model/year of your VW?
Customer: 98 beetle
JA: Are you fixing your Beetle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes a deer hit my daughters car broke the headlight I unhooked the battery to fix the light socket now it wont stay running

Hi, it sounds like the electronic throttle actuator has lost it's setting. Try turning the key on but don't start the car. Leave the key on for 3-4 minutes then start the car and see if it will idle.

Ok, if the throttle will not reset by leaving the key on you will need to get the car connected to the VW tester to have the throttle adaption done with the tester. This is a common failure when the battery is disconnected.
