While driving my otherwise reliable 1997 2.0 golf and small

Customer Question

Hello, while driving my otherwise reliable 1997 2.0 golf and small amount of smoke came from around the gauge cluster and the whole car stopped. Now it wont start and all of the gauges are not registering (fuel in tank but show empty) and the gauges wont light up. I tired to find an issue with the wiring but nothing is noticeably burnt or melted .

does the car carnk / engine turn over?

if so then I'd next check for spark by 1st check for spark by removing one of the spark plugs and plug it back into its lead and rest it on the metal of the engine ( DO NOT hold it on place by hand) then have your assistant turn the engine over whilst you watch the plug. It should give a fat blue spark at regular intervals.
