2007 vw passat 2.0 will not turn over when attempting to

Customer Question

2007 vw passat 2.0 will not turn over when attempting to start. Auto tranny. symptoms prior to failure. Had to press hard on brake pedal to get it to start. Would have difficult time starting first thing but the rest of the day seemed fine.

So you turn the key and it does nothing at all? Does the steering wheel light come up on the dash, yellow lit or red lit? Any warnings in the MFI?

REgarding the brake switch, does it shift out of park OK when pressing the brake, and not shift unless you press the brake?

And this has the key you insert into the dash, and press in, correct?

You mean press the key in correct? yes it does. All lights on dash appear normal. Yes it shifts out of park when brake is pressed. We have begun by cleaning battery terminals, no change. We are going to take in battery for a load test as it is hot here and the battery is old. What are the next steps after battery.

typically if the brake switch is keeping you from starting, it also will not light the brake lights or unlock the shifter. Is your PRNDL display in the dash showing that you are in Park? Sometimes an issue with the shifter handle keeps it from locking into P properly until you bump it forward again, you could also try shifting it into Neutral and see if this makes any difference.

If the steering wheel light come on yellow it is OK, if it is red the steering column immobilizer module is blocking starting.
