2000 VW Beetle with the 2.0 engine. Engine cranks but

Customer Question

2000 VW Beetle with the 2.0 engine. Engine cranks but doesn't start every time. Can crank several times and won't start. Other times, can crank once and will start. Will stall occasionally while driving or running at idle.
The fuel pump is new, the fuel pressure regulator is new, coil, wires and spark plugs are new.

More then likely you have a faulty crank sensor that is starting to fail these are very common to cause the issue you are having it is located on the block to the right of the oil filter . I hope this helps please dont forget to provide positive feedback for the help provided thank you

ok i will need for you to check if your missing fuel pressure or spark when the car wont start ??

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Fuel pressure is good. Spark is not. Did some tests called out in the Chilton manual. The cam position sensor is getting 5 volts in but not putting out the 0 to 10 volts as the engine is rotated when backpinning terminal 2. It puts out a constant 4 volts.

When it occasionally does start, it runs well.
