My 88 VW Cabriolet starts MOST of the time, but other times

Customer Question

My 88 VW Cabriolet starts MOST of the time, but other times it just won't start at all. When it does run, it runs great! It always has spark and the fuel filter is changed frequently. An independent shop can't figure it out. Can you?

was the shop able to duplicate the issue? What I see most often is either a bad coil (often after the car has been heated up) or a bad Hall Effect Sender in the distributor, but either of those would not allow a spark- so they need to test for that when it is acting up.
