Are you having trouble with the CHAT system?

Its a 99 VW Passat 4 cylinder Manual. I just broke the cv joint and i replaced the axle. Now it still wont run.

Ok - when you say it wont "run" - you mean, move?
Customer:
Yes, when I put it into first to move it just squeeks on that side and doesnt move.
Customer:
like a squeeky clank

is this a manual or an auto trans?

Was the old CV you took out faulty for sure?

ya i blew it. the boot was busted. the balls were on the road. i guess one side of the new axle was spinning.
Customer:
idk which side was. i know the wheel wont spin.

So - as it stands now - you put the car in gear - let the clutch out - and what exactly happens/

the wheel makes a squeeking clank sound and i stop as soon as i hear it once.
Mike :
Ok so the car will actually move then / drive along - but noisy?
Customer:
no it wont move at all. it just sits there and makes that noise.
Mike :
right... Im with you ... have you checked / looked at the actual drive shaft -while its in gear ....( with someone else in the driving seat ) to see if its actually rotating?
Customer:
the inner part of the axle by the transmission?
Customer:
i was in the driver eat. i heard my buddy say it was spinning.
Mike :
You mean the inner part is rotating - the rest of the shaft isnt..

ya i think so.

Right ok - which cv joint did you replace - inner or outer?
Mike :
or was it the whole shaft inc the two cv joints?

well the whole axle shaft

right ..the joints can be replaced seperatly thats why I asked - Ok so..

I suspect whats happening here then is -
Customer:
i know. i was just told itd be easier.
Mike :
(yes thats true ) the shaft is spinning as your buddy says - so, its either not fully in / connected in - to the diff / transmssion -or, its come disconnected inside one of the joints - cv joints. To explain :
Mike :
If its fully in the transmission... and rotating - but the shaft isnt - then it has to have come disconnected inside the inner cv joint.
Mike :
If the whole shaft is rotating - but not the wheel - or the outer cv -, then its come disconnected inside the outer cv boot
Customer:
so the new cv joint is disconnected from the other on the inside of it possibly?
Mike :
yes - that does happen sometimes - especially if you were strugglng a bit - the shaft can easily slide out of its "drive" inside the joint
Customer:
could it be a transmission problem?

OK - thats why I typed as above - to show you how to determine just where the fault lies - let me give you that again to help you :

If its fully in the transmission... and rotating - but the shaft isnt - then it has to have come disconnected inside the inner cv joint.
If the whole shaft is rotating - but not the wheel - or the outer cv -, then its come disconnected inside the outer cv boot

Also - if it is fully in the transmission - and all is well with the joints - but its not rotating, then yes, there is a fault in the diff .

ok ya thats what i was wondering. what do you think is more likely?
Mike :
I think , though not having seen it, but Its more likely that the actual shaft has slid out of the inner part / drive part -inside the joint. The easiest way to tell is - (other than watching it in gear as above ) is ease the rubber boots back off - and then you can physically see inside -the shaft should be absolutely central in the joint -
