Does it run? Because the 1.8T has had some problems with developing oil sludge, which will cause the oil light to come on (carbon particles clog the oil pickup tube and pressure drops) It requires taking the pan off and cleaning it out, and replacing the pickup tube and maybe the pump. If it was run long distance it may have damaged the bearings.

Also, the 1.8T Passat seems to split CV boots, tie rod end boots, and control arm boots (and get resulting looseness in the steering when the joints wear) more than any other vehicle, including the V6 Passat with almost the same suspension setup.

For $990 it is almost worth it just for the body, interior, and electronics, to swap a new or rebuilt engine into, if the interior is in good shape.

Also note that there is a current recall for the sunroof drains and the fresh air intake plenum, both of which could cause excess rainwater to back up and get into the car, soaking the carpets and intruding into control modules under the floor- the Transmission control module on the passenger side (most likely, as the fresh air is on that side) and the Comfort module on the driver side (if the sunroof drains leak) However, since this is a recall, if it hasn't been done yet and it turns out there are problems in those areas, then any resulting damage is related to the recall and should be covered by VWOA. You can inspect the sunroof drains where they come out of the A pillar (open the front doors, right near the front edge of the door in the body) there shoudl be a rubber tube. From the factory it comes with the end flattened, the recall has it "modified" to have a "V" cut into the middle of the end (though most just cut the flat part off)
