Customer Question
2000 Volvo v70 2.4l engine...
2000 Volvo v70 2.4l engine. starts, idles at 900 rpm, and dies after 5 minutes or when AC turned on. I just replaced the head, The cams are aligned correctly. During timing belt installation it says to line up the cam sprocket marks with the notches in the front cam upper plastic cover and the crank with the pointer casting on the block, which I did. I turned it through two revolutions on the crank and all the marks line up. The engine has VVT timing and it says to continue one quarter turn then back up to the marks and reset exhaust cam back to the mark. Is this correct because My diagnostic tester live dat shows the spark advance at 10.5 BDC . Is this correct?

Original problem was timing belt tensioner was damaged with roller bearings missing. I ordered a complete kit with new belt / tensioner and water pump. engine was running normal. Before removing anything I checked that the timing marks were lined up correctly. I preceded with the removal and installation of the components per the step by step instructions that came with the kit. I didn't think I needed a repair manual since the instructions were very explicit. After installation and tensioner adjustment I started the engine and everything seemed ok. ( idle normal ) I drove the car and found it did not have any acceleration and engine started making banging noises. I assumed I bent some valves. Removed the head and I was correct ( during engine teardown I found the new tensioner center shaft broken with the spring spinning on the broken shaft ) I assumed this caused the timing to go south and caused the valves to contact the pistons). No damaged to the pistons or cylinders.. Machine shop rebuilt the head. ( $600.00 ) four bent valves, new guide seals, etc. reinstalled the head. completed the rebuild ( new gaskets / head bolts etc ) and rechecked the timing and tensioner several times. the only thing was the VVT timing. I am not sure that I have the timing correct at this time either. Again engine runs at Idle normal for 5 minutes then dies. AND the DTC code P1670 has re appeared. tried spare key no help. Diagnostic tester shows live data with spark advance at 10.5. Don't have a repair manual for guidance. Again could the P1670 code cause this problem....
