Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

There are literally dozens of possible causes for the engine light to come on. The engine light comes on when the powertrain control module sees an issue in a monitored component or system and sets a fault code.

Possible causes include spark plugs, coils, injectors, any sensor on the engine or transmission, transmission issues, catalytic converter efficiency, an evaporative emissions system issue, a loose or bad gas cap could be the cause. One easy thing you can do is make sure the gas cap is tight.

The first step in diagnosing the problem will be to use a scan tool or code reader to see what fault codes have set in the engine controller and then testing can be done from there.
