Hello, My name is ***** ***** I am a Volvo dealership technician. I am going to help you with your question today. It does indeed sound like an issue with the compressor clutch.
Expert:  Andy replied 2 years ago.
What happens is, the clutch eventually wears out and cannot stay engaged when it gets hot. Then it cuts out.

The whole de-shimming thing you read about on the internet is more of a temporary band aid than an actual fix. Either the clutch or the compressor need to be replaced. Due to the age of the vehicle, it is usually better to replace the whole compressor since it comes with a new clutch already installed and properly adjusted.
