I have a Nikon D3000. Cannot get it to take a pic in auto focus.

Technician's Assistant: How long have you had your D3000?

It makes a sound like a motor trying to run, but will not take pic. Can take a pic in manual focus.

Technician's Assistant: What have you tried so far with your Nikon product?

If I take a couple in manual mode and then switch, in the past it worked on auto focus, but not now

How long has the battery or batteries in the camera been in-use? If over a year, then you might possibly have a battery/batteries that are getting weak.

Rechargeable batteries do get weaker with time, and eventually fail to deliver enough power to start up a device like a digital camera; they then need replacing.

The replacement battery needs to be charged up for 6+ hours before its first use, owing to its having been on a shelf for a considerable time.

- A few questions about the camera's history, please:
How old is the camera? in months or years since you bought it.

Has the camera been dropped or otherwise subjected to mechanical shock(s) in its lifetime?
Has the camera been operated in or subjected to, temperatures below 32 degrees F (freezing point) or above about 100 degrees F ?
Has it ever been subjected to a humidity higher than 85 % or gotten wet ?
Has the camera been operated in a gritty or sandy environment, such as a beach, a seaside, a construction site, or the like?

I bought the camera from its first owner about 3 years ago. I use it 5 times a week. First owner used less often.
No adverse conditions that I am aware of. If it is the batterey, would it still work in manual focus and not auto focus?
Where would I go to replace battery?

I think from the sound of that, and what you asked about before, that it is a battery that might be wearing out.

Batteries that fail, are not delivering enough power at peak demand, sometimes. And your description sounds as if the peak demand of taking a picture is not something the camera's present battery (3 years old - or older perhaps?-) is capable of delivering adequately.

(Of course, it might be that a motor in the camera is jammed or defective, perhaps, too. But trying a new battery first seems logical.)

If you will tell me what battery has been used in it, and I can point you to a source, or several sources, for a good replacement for it.

You're welcome. I hope that fixes the problem. Would you rather wait to rate my work until you have the new battery, have charged it up fully for at least 4 continuous hours on the charger, and seen whether it helps, or not?
