My camera was dropped last night. It is now saying that even when there is a card in the camera there is not and will download no new pictures

I regret hearing that your camera was dropped. Problems may be anticipated in future, as well as the current problem - when a digital camera is subjected to shocks, in my experience, often the problems really start months later.

Now as to the present: your camera's memory card slot is doubtless broken, period. The camera will require servicing, and Canon services such cameras with ideal excellence and turnaround time (so I advise you to be frank and admit you dropped the camera and that it needs a general inspection for breakage damage - unless of course, you had rather just wait for problems to appear, which is your choice.) Call Canon for repair at 1-888-OK-CANON, or start the repair process by going to this page:

and scroll down a little and click on Request Product Repair, and follow the process through.
