Customer Question
Panasonic ag-hsc1ue doesn't turn...

Panasonic ag-hsc1ue doesn't turn on. I have not used it for about 6-months then went to turn on the other day to film kids nativity play with what I thought was a recently charged battery. It turned on a couple of times now won't turn on at all. I can only guess battery is defuncted and not holding charge or else something on the mother board has blown. I must say despite its age it's a well looked after camera and still looks brand new.

Technician's Assistant: Are there any flashing lights, symbols, or messages on your camera or display screen?

No power whatsoever

Technician's Assistant: Have you tried removing and replacing the battery and/or SD card?

Not the SD card. I will give it a go

Technician's Assistant: Anything else you want the Camera Expert to know before I connect you?

No I'm an electrical engineer and have a tester to test the batteries but the slots are so small I cannot get the probes in to ascertain a reading.

If it helps the electronic auto lens cover which normally closes on powering down/switching off is still in the open position.

I need a refund on my question which for some reason has been posted in the Auto Mechanics UK car section. I have an issue with my Panasonic camcorder which has nothing to do with Auto Mechanic.

Hi Darren, your question has been moved to the Camera and Video section.

if the battery is not charged and discharged regularly (once a week or so) it will lose its ability to store charge.

Does the camcorder work ok if you keep a power cord connected to it?

Hi Pete, I’ve had this from New and these batteries are genuine replacements but having said that they are probably around about 5 years old. My first thought was what you said about the batteries. I forgot that this could be powered up via the patch cable that powers the hard drive that comes with it. We have just moved so I have to find the drive as that is where the lead is to connect to the camera. I will get back to you over the weekend after I’ve found it.

Ok, let me know if it works!

Hi Pete sorry for not getting back to you sooner but i was so busy over the Christmas and I’ve only now just located the lead. I plugged it in a moment ago and immediately I could smell something so quickly withdrew the cable. If you can remember I was was about to film a nativity play that my son was in and had switched the camera on and off a few times with the battery in to adjust settings then when I switched on to commence filming it suddenly went off.
Camera and Video Technician: Pete, Electronic Engineer replied 6 months ago

Hi Darren, are you certain that the lead was the correct one? Do you know where the smell is coming from - the battery area, or the wall plug?

Ask Your Own Camera and Video Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I’m fairly sure it’s the right one. I’ve had it from new and it came with a portable rechargeable 40gb hard drive with it’s on power supply. Both the charger For the camera and the power supply for the portable hard drive output 9.3v. The smell came from the area near the smart card/component socket/dc input. I’ve checked both power sources and they are identical outputs 9.3v positive on centre pin. I don’t think it’s a battery issue the camera died instantly when I turned it on for about the third time to film. Could it be a blown capacitor that has created a short circuit that would be my guess.
Camera and Video Technician: Pete, Electronic Engineer replied 6 months ago

It is possible that it is a short circuit, or if the camera has not been used for some time then it may just be some dust burning off.

Ask Your Own Camera and Video Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
I doubt very much if it’s dust related it’s kept in a case and practically brand new still. it wasn’t a dust burning smell. It was more like something was getting hot that shouldn’t and was over heating.
Camera and Video Technician: Pete, Electronic Engineer replied 6 months ago

Are you planning to open it up and take a look inside, or send it for repair?

Ask Your Own Camera and Video Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
Although I’m fairly confident investigating these kinda things, with two young boys running about the house I’m more concerend losing the tiny screws. If it’s a capacitor im guessing it should be fairly obvious what one. Assuming there is no other issues since feeding it 9.3 volts it could be a cheap repair. Other than that I will have to send it to Panasonic. What your thoughts?
Camera and Video Technician: Pete, Electronic Engineer replied 6 months ago
if you are confident enough opening it up when you have some spare time then it should be fairly obvious to spot any burned out or swollen capacitors. If not visually obvious then you can always follow the burning smell using your nose.

following ones nose can be be helpful. If there was a schematic/service manual available it would make things s tad easier for testing.
Camera and Video Technician: Pete, Electronic Engineer replied 6 months ago

Morning Darren, all I have available here is the mechanical assembly diagram, I cannot locate schematics anywhere. See attached.
