Customer Question
Hi, I have an EOS...
Hi, I have an EOS 50d. First the flasher no longer closed. After gently applying a bit of WD40 to the locking hook that is operable again. However, either a not connected or a connected issue now all pictures are over exposed. I have tried a different lens and that gives the same type of photos that are way over exposed (close to white...). If I put the camera on the manual settings I can make proper pictures by increasing ISO and reducing shutter speed etc. But the metering indicator constantly is all the way to the left indicating that it thinks the picture will be under exposed. I need to increase the shutter speed to seconds (!) to get the metering indicator in the middle. But then off course the photos are super over exposed. With normal shutter times (in the manual mode) I can make okay pictures. To me seems the metering sensor is either dirty and does not estimate how light it is, or it's broken or maybe affected by the WD40. Somebody any idea what I else I can do? this, Bart

Hi,

If you have not already done so:

Perform a hard reset by removing the lens, main battery, memory card, and the date battery using the information attached. Once these have been removed, turn the camera to "ON" and allow it to sit for ten minutes. Turn the camera to "OFF", reinstall both batteries and the memory and try it out again.

This should reset the metering system.

Please let me know the result.

Please keep in mind that my diagnosis & solutions provided are directly dependent on the accuracy of your description of the problem. As with any "do it yourself" fixes, success is a "team effort", since I can't see or touch the camera, and relies on the customer's manual dexterity and ability to follow the instructions well.

Hi Russell, I already did that. I also installed the firmware again (1.0.9) and tried another lens I have. But not to be pessimistic tried your tip again and waited a bit longer. Then installed small battery, large battery, memory card and finally the lens. Unfortunately same problem. Inside with the camera on the M setting I can play with ISO, shutter speed and aperture settings to make a picture that is not over exposed. When I press the button to make the picture halfway it does consistently say that the settings will result in an underexposed picture (indicator all the way to the left). If I point the lens at a lamp or e.g. outside towards the sky instead of something on the ground the metering indicator does go to the right. Also when I increase shutter speed or enlarge the aperture the metering indicator moves. When I change settings such in M mode that metering indicator is in the middle the picture is extremely overexposed. I added 3 pictures. One using the automatic mode (green square), one using M with settings such that the picture is not over exposed. And the 3rd one is a picture of the display showing the metering indicator stating the picture is underexposed. To get the metering setting in the middle I need to increase the shutter speed to something like 1 or 2 seconds... Obviously resulting in an completely white photo. I repeated the above with my other lens with very similar results (suggesting to me that the camera and not the lens is the problem). Is there more I can do? Thanks, Bart

sorry, in description mixed metering and exposure compensation. Read exposure compensation where I typed metering.
Camera and Video Technician: Russell A., Camera and Video Technician replied 10 months ago

Unfortunately, all of the troubleshooting that you have done indicates that the sensor itself (the image sensor) is probably still good, but, the circuit that processes the data for metering is failing. There are no reasonable user fixes for this issue. This is probably not connected to the flash problem and a main circuit board replacement is generally the only solution.

Because there is nothing that I can add to what you have already done I can "opt out", if you like, so that another expert can chime in with any other ideas. Please let me know.
