I bought a Duracell dr9953 battery for the Sony camera and now get a "for use with compatible battery only" after a few seconds of switching the camera on and then it automatically switches off

ok, if it says this normally it cannot work with the battery, but it can also be another cause

What was the issue you had before you switched the battery, that made you purchase a new one

Original battery had come to the end of its life and would not take a charge

ok, there is no compatability listing with the battery you got, officially and it is rejecting it, so incompatability is going to be the only cause for this.
