This problem can occur if the lens got a knock, or if some sand or grit got into the lens mechanism.

You can try blowing some compressed air around it or use a fine brush to help dislodge any small particles of sand or grit that may have gotten trapped in the lens.

If that doesn't work, then the camera will need to be disassembled and cleaned internally. A local electronics or camera repair shop can do this for you.
