I have a lumix...

I have a lumix DC camera and I'm getting a messgae for one of my mp4: this motion image cannot be played all the others played fine.

Technician's Assistant: What's the exact make and model of the camera? And can you guesstimate how old it is?

It's about 4 years old. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS25 Digital

Technician's Assistant: What happened right before this popped up? What troubleshooting have you tried?

I tried to upload it to my computer to get it to play.

Technician's Assistant: Anything else you want the camera expert to know before I connect you?

I tried to get it to play in Quicktime. It didn't work but it does have a file size, so I know something is there and something recorded. I just can't get it to play back

To be honest, the file might perhaps be corrupted and unplayable.

But, MP4 playback in any app is dependent upon a Codec, a plugin added on to the player app, to interpret the coding type of the particular media file.

I suggest that doubtfully - esp. if there was anything even faintly unusual about the recording of the MP4, or its size, settings used, etc. - that you might be able to find it playable if you used a different player than QT, for instance Windows Media Player with an MP4 codec added to it.

After that, if it still refuses to play, or if it also has nothing odd about it or about its size or recording method and conditions, it might just be a corrupted file.

(Try re-downloading a second copy of it from the camera, also, if it is still on the camera. It might possibly have been corrupted in the first downloading, which a second download will check on and, just possibly, fix.)

I've tried using different video/media players, but I would get an error saying that the file is not supported. The mp4 is on a 32 GB SD card with 28G available. Now this file is the largest on the card with 1.4GB. I don't know if that has anything to do with it not playing. The file will not play in the camera either, even though all the videos recorded after that one came out fine. I tried to copy it to the computer, but it won't copy because of an "unsupported file" error.

If it (the large MP4 file in question) doesn't copy to the computer owing to that sort of error, then you should copy it manually, by locate-drag-and-drop, locating the file on your camera by treating your (connected) camera as a disk-drive type device.

The file might well be simply corrupted, or, at 1.4 GB, it could simply be quite LARGE. In which case, special file players or special video file editors might still be able to play it, or if editor software, be able to split it into < 1 GB (at a guess) sized pieces that would play on common video player software.

I tried to manually tried drag-n-drop transfer the file using a connected USB cable, but I got the same message about the video not being supported even though the format is .mp4, which should be supported.What kind of editor software would you suggest that could possibly break the file into smaller chunks?

Almost any movie editor software would probably work, for that purpose. *If* you were on a Windows platform, I'd recommend Windows Movie Maker, which is after all easy-to-use at least... but I suspect you're working on an Apple computer - correct?

What version of QuickTime are you using to try to play the file, please?

I'm working on an Apple Computer. I have version 10.4 of QuickTime and Video Pad Video Editor. Neither of those were able to open the file. I do have access to a Windows Machine, so I'll try Windows Movie Maker.

One of my co-workers just mentioned to me that if I turn off the camera instead of stopping the video, then the file could be corrupted because it never had a chance to finalize. I don't remember, but it's very possible that I did do this. Could this be the source of the problem?

Yes, that could 'truncate' the file structure, and not provide the right information for the file to be basically readable - if that is indeed what you did.

This question has gotten a little blurred in my recollection, but perhaps such a truncated or interrupted video file could be recovered with the right utility, at least up to the point of interruption... the video file type is MP4, correct? and will it be on a Windows computer, or on an Apple computer, that it will perhaps be recovered to usability?

it's an mp4 that I'm trying to play on a MAC using QuickTime and Video Pad Video Editor. I haven't tried the Windows Movie Maker option. I'll try that and see if it works.
