Customer Question

Have a Nikon D80 (friend's) that he is having issues with. He has not used the camera in years. Battery was dead. Cleaned contacts on camera body and both lenses. Still getting ERR message and flashing CLOCK message when shutter is depressed.
JA: Are you experiencing the same issue in different shooting modes, or just one?
Customer: All modes and also tried the two different lenses.
JA: Has there been any damage to your camera recently (e.g. from dropping it or getting it wet)?
Customer: I cannot answer that since it is a friend's. That was actually my initial concern.
JA: Anything else you want the camera expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: I also performed the factory reset procedure.

In order to clear the error and allow the camera to take a shot you must go to the setup menu and set the time and date under the World Time heading.

Press Menu

Arrow left once

Arrow down to the wrench tab (setup)

Arrow right once

Arrow down to World Time and set the date and time

Press OK and then Menu to return to normal mode

CLOCK flashing is gone. ERR is still flashing. I turned off and on and also took battery out and reinserted it. When looking through viewfinder, there is also a flashing ERR and there is no focus.

Set the A/M switch on the lens to M and the camera mode to Manual. Please let me know if the error clears. We are trying to determine if the is a mechanical issue in the shutter not the lens.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
ERR message did not clear.
Expert:  Russell A. replied 2 months ago.

Leave the camera mode in Manual. Remove the lens and the memory card (the error may clear at this point). If it clears re-insert the memory card and seif the error returns. If not, try to fire the shutter while observing the mirror in the lens area and note if it attempts to move. Let me know if the mirror lifts and the shutter fires.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Mirror moves and shutter activates. I'm at a loss.

34;400014" flashes when shutter is released.
Expert:  Russell A. replied 2 months ago.

If the memory card is in that would be the picture number. Remount a lens and see if the error returns.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I did. That numeric message is in place of "ERR", not where the number pictures is displayed. "ERR" still displayed after lens has been reattached.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I guess he will just have to send to a repair site.
Expert:  Russell A. replied 2 months ago.

Yes, from your description, it appears that the aperture control switch that tells the electronics module in the camera what phase the camera is in has possibly failed. That would require a replacement part. The last thing to try is a full reset using the instructions shown in the attached photo.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I did the reset before I did this contact with you. Thanks for your help.

You are quite welcome!
