My camera says "Card Locked" when I try to take a picture.

My camera says "Card Locked" when I try to take a picture. Can you help me unlock it?
JA: What's the exact make and model of the camera? And can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: About 5 years. It's an SD990 IS model.
JA: What happened right before this popped up? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I haven't used it in a very long time. I haven't figured out anything to try.

Turn the camera off. Slide the lever/switch on the side of the camera to pop open the access compartment where the battery and memory card is.
Remove the memory card (push in slightly and it will pop out as it is spring loaded).

Examine the back of the memory card for a small (usually yellow) switch, slided that to the opposite position, replace the card, close the compartment, and turn the camera back on.
