The lens may be faulty, or it may just not be making a good connection with the camera body.
Try removing the lens from the camera, then clean the contact area on the camera body and also on the lens.
Reattach the lens firmly and try again.
If that doesn't work, try with a different lens and let me know the results...
In most cases this problem is due to a bad connection.
However in some cases the internal circuitry of the lens can become defective, usually after it has been dropped or suffered a shock of some sort, but it can also occur without being dropped.
A local camera shop should be able to test a different lens on the camera body for you if you don't have another lens available.
