Hi Pearl,

Customer: I have a canon vixia hf s30 but I can't switch from internal memory to the SD card to record because "rec media for movies" is missing.
JA: Is there anything else the Camera Technician should be aware of?
Customer: No
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the Camera Technician about your situation and then connect you two.

Hello and thank you for your question, I look forward to assisting you today. How old it the SD card you are trying to record to?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Maybe 4 years. I have 2 16GB Lexas Platinum II SD Cards in slot A and B.

If you have recorded and erased a lot over the years, it may be time to replace them. Can you still store photographs on the cards?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I just looked at the memory options again with a set of newer SD cards that I placed in the camera and the same thing happens. I can see "Rec Media for Photos", but not "Rec Media for Movies". So there has to be another reason why that option is not showing up.
Expert:  Dan replied 1 year ago.

Did you initialize the new card before trying to record to it?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
they were already initialized. We just haven't used them.

When the power is off, insert a memory card into slot A, and then close the cover. Set the mode switch to <M> and turn on the camcorder. Touch Function then Menu and then the Film icon as you see in the attachment. Do you see the Rec media for movies now?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I switched mode to <M> and inserted just one memory car into A and turned on the camera. I still only see <Rec media for photos> in the Function Menu. See attached photos.

Can you check your memory cards for the class number please? I believe this particular camera had a problem with cards above a class 6 rating. Does the record function appear when selecting the internal memory?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The SD cards that I am using right now are a class 6.

Well unfortunately I am out of ideas. I think the best thing to try is contacting Canon Support at 1-***-***-****. Hopefully this is a quick fix and nothing you will need to send the camera in for. When it is resolved, I would like to know what they found please.

I figured it out with the help of an expert here. I was accessing the functions menu in playback mode whereas that option is only available in the functions menu in shoot mode. This is very confusing for us as the the end user, but at least we figured it out.

Good. I know how these things can be confusing particularly when it is something so minor causing the problem. I am glad you got it working, and it was a pleasure assisting you.
