Customer Question

I can successfully down load video from an A77II camera to my Samsung S5 using 'Playmemories Mobile', however the stored file is in a 3:2 ratio instead of the correct 4:3 ratio. How can I instruct either the camera or the phone to store the file in the proper 4:3 aspect ration?

Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.

Make sure the aspect ratio isn't simply in the player you are viewing the video file with.

In fact there is no reason for the file itself to change, aspect ratio or otherwise! Test this by copying the file back from the Samsung to a computer, and see what the aspect ratio is when viewed on the computer.

In fact whatever app you are playing the video with, may have an option or setting to readjust aspect ratio to fit the screen.

Are you familiar with the program 'Playmemories Mobile' and how it is used to wirelessly transfer files from the A77II to a Samsung S5 phone? I believe experience with this program/transfer process is necessary to resolve my issue.
Additional information: I record video (and photos) with the A77II, transfer the files (using 'Playmemories Mobile') to the S5 and then share on social media via Twitter/FB. I have checked the recorded video on my camera before transferring and it has the correct aspect ratio. I then send it to my phone and view it in the file gallery where it is incorrectly displayed with wrong aspect ratio. I have tried to post it to a social media program where it also is displayed with the wrong aspect ratio. Therefore there must be something in the 'Playmemories Mobile' settings to manage this transfer, however I do not see this in the program. Note: Photos transferred from my camera are 3:2 ratio and video is 4:3. Both jpg and MP4 files are sent to the same folder on my S5 using 'Playmemories Mobile'. Could this be the problem? If it is, how to direct 'Playmemories Mobile' to send video to a separate file? (I have no problem with photo aspect ratio)

I agree, the program that manages the transfer is somehow, inappropriately, changing actual aspect ratio in the file, in all likelihood.

I think that Aspect Ratio might be either an inherent aspect of the program (i.e. it can only 'handle' certain aspect ratios, a limited choice that does not match the aspect ratio natively 'seen' or produced by your mobile camera), or a Setting ... and/or both.

You might want, quite simply, to use a different program for camera transfers. Or, simply transfer videos by hand as it were, by selecting the video on your mobile device, then copying it to e.g. the Cloud, and then posting from the Cloud storage to your Twitter/FB accounts.

The 'Playmemories Mobile' App is Sony's program to wirelessly transfer files from its (Sony) A77II camera to cell phones. It works great for transferring photos but has an aspect ratio issue with video. Another method of transferring video files may work as you suggested, but I need a simple/quick way to do these transfers as I do 'live reports' during events as they occur. Adding additional steps to the process is not the direction I want to go, especially when I have a program ( 'Playmemories Mobile') that generally works well, but has this one issue. Please connect me with someone with 'Playmemories Mobile' experience since there must be some program 'setting option' to correct this problem.

I have Opted Out, not knowing much about Playmemories Mobile settings.

I still suggest using something different, not that program/app, for transfers of files.

Thanks Russell, if someone could tell me a better app to use I would certainly consider using it. However first I want to verify that 'Playmemories Mobile' can not be setup to handle the video transfer (correctly).

I am still looking for an answer. Please be aware that I need someone with direct experience with Sony 'Playmemories Mobile' that can explain wireless transfer of video files to my Samsung S5 and have the transferred file in the correct aspect ratio on my phone. I realize there are work-arounds to transfer the video file first to a computer and then upload via cable connection to the phone, but I need to be able to do this directly to my phone wirelessly in a single step.
