my Nikon Cool pix L20 will turn on but it doesn't show any picture

Reset the camera, if you can see the menu, using the instructions below.

Press Menu
Arrow left once
Arrow down to Setup (The tab with the Wrench)
Arrow right once
Arrow down to Reset
Arrow right once
Use the up and down arrows to select Yes
Press OK
Press the menu button to leave the menu

If the reset does not restore the view of the subject, then, unfortunately what you have described indicates that there is a problem with the ccd (the light sensitive chip that produces the image) or the connection to it, the L20 was not on any list of cameras for possible free repair.
