Customer Question

I have an Olympus Magnafire camera for my Olympus BX51 microscope. I left the camera on over the weekend and now I just have a black screen with no image. I am using an iMac computer.

Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question. How old is the Magnafire camera, please? And, is the black screen the main screen on the camera (just to be sure it's the camera that seems to be non-functional) ? Let me know, thanks.

I think it's about 12 years old. The Live Window on the computer is open, but is black

12 years is a long time for a digital camera to work well. The Live View window is all very well, but if it's just on the computer, that might mean something other than 'broken camera', yet. How does the screen on the camera itself do? does it still work OK?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
The camera doesn't have its own screen, it has a Firewire connection to the computer

OK. Does the computer show, recognize, have an icon, for the camera? What is the computer, please, a Windows PC, or an Apple?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I would say yes--although I don't see an icon for the camera. But when I start the Magnafire software--I initially get a message that says "camera off or disconnected." Then I turn on the camera and that message disappears and a 'Live Window' opens. The problem is that the Live window stays black even when it should be seeing an image. Last week it was working fine. The computer is an iMac.

When I turn on the camera I also see a message on the computer that says 'Magnafire camera initialized.'

Can you verify in any other way, that the camera is still taking pictures OK? that would distinguish whether it is a problem with the image sensor, with the transmission of images to the computer (or, perhaps, a problem with the lens cover??)
