Have a Panasonic AG-HVX200A HD P2 camera. Tried importing DV

Customer Question

Have a Panasonic AG-HVX200A HD P2 camera. Tried importing DV tape video from camera into the PC with the USB 2.0 to standard USB port and get nothing. The computer doesn't acknowledge the camera (device) and I can not import.
Read the manual and still not able to get it done.

Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question. The usual way to get video from that model of camera is to transfer video from the camera's built-in memory, onto a 'P2 card' inserted into the camera's memory card slot, then take that card, insert it into a computer's memory card reader, and copy off the memory card onto the computer's hard drive, and there you are with the task completed. which is the typical P2 memory card.A rather cheaper example available is this: If those appear larger in capacity and more top-of-the-line than you are looking for or needing, then let me know, and I will look up sources for compatible and smaller/less-expensive memory cards.

I had decided at least for now, to tape on a DV tape. Why isn't it possible to simply play the DV tape from the camera and import that directly into the PC? I don't have a P2 card so therefore can't do as you suggest. What now?

Well, what video outputs does the camera have? it won't necessarily route video through a USB port, you know - not by default. Is there an HDMI output, perhaps, or S-video, or even RCA plugs for video output? To get video from a USB port, would require first that the computer recognize the camera as a device - connect it and check inStart - Computerand see if there is an icon there for the camera - and secondly, some sort of capture software. But!: if the camera is recognized by the system and has an icon in the Computer window, then you can double-click on the icon for the camera there and then a window will open showing what the camera sees, and also perhaps an option or menu option for 'Capture', which will allow you to capture video sent from the camera into a file.

I have USB 2.0 and firewire. I did receive a new computer today however with firewire input. If I get the cable to link the two, do you think that will work? Will the computer recognize the camera as a device then?

Yes, try the Firewire linkup. See how it does, with the advice I just gave you also.
