Hi Thomas, please be sure that the "record inhibit" tab on tape is closed to allow recording(located on rear left of tape). If this is in proper position and playback functions,I will suggest a problem with record inhibit switch, which is located at rear left of mechanism.A lever engages the switch, and if not properly engaging, record will not function.I will suggest to look at lever on left rear of mech, where tab of tape is and see if (by pressing) lever seems to be hitting switch, you'll feel a click. This lever is spring loaded and spring does have a tendency to loosen and cause this problem, also switch itself goes bad.I will suspect that service may be needed on this model if switch replacement is needed,as this is an invasive repair, although should be cost effective.

If you have any other questions please ask....Best to you,Joe
