I have a PowerShot SD1000, I can view images, but when the camera and video is on and the shutter is pressed the monitor goes blank, the camera shuts off, but the lens does not retract. What's with that?

Julian :

Hello Sir & welcome to JustAnswer. I am happy to answer your question.

Julian :

Please took out the memory card from the camera. After that turn on the camera then go in the setting list. From there select the RESET Setting & then Reset the camera. After resetting take out the battery & wait 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes insert the charged battery & memory card. Turn on the camera & format the memory card. After formatting memory card try to use. Hope you did not face any problem . * Before formatting the memory card don't forget to take the memory card data back up*

Julian, I've taken out the memory card, turned camera on, got a "No memory card" message, but when I press Func.Set get no reaction.

Julian, you still there?

Julian :

As per your information its a problem of the camera circuit board fault. I suggest you please visit service center for repairing the circuit board fault. Thank you.

Does the lens extend correctly when you turn the camera on?

Are the unusual sounds (grinding or clicking)?

Does the camera focus?

Does the zoom function operate?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Russ, everything seems to operate properly, lens extends when turned on, usual sounds, camera focusses and zoom function operates. Problem when shutter pushed monitor shuts down and appears to shut off, except lens doesn't retract.
Remove the memory card, try it once and let me know what happens.
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
I've taken memory card out and have same result, also recharged battery.

To try to establish a reference point, if you have not already done so, reset the camera to the default settings using the instructions below. It may also reset the lens positioning, which in many cases can cause this problem. Please let me know the result.

Please keep in mind that my diagnosis & solutions provided are directly dependent on the accuracy of your description of the problem. As with any "do it yourself" fixes, success is a "team effort", since I can't see or touch the camera, and relies on the customer's manual dexterity and ability to follow the instructions well.

Sorry, Russ. That did not work neither. Reset as suggested pressed shutter automatically turned camera off, but kept lens extended.
Mr. Russ, also gives you some Right suggestions but that will also not working with your camera. So i like to suggest you one more thing that is

1. Took out the battery and memory card from the camera.
2. use a clean cloth for cleaning the battery compartment .
3. Use cotton ear swab stick for cleaning the internal battery connector PIN. Make sure that are not rusted. Use spot light for viewing them.
4. Put the camera in the sun light ( 30 minutes just for worming up) with out inserting the battery and memory card & keep the battery door open.
5. Now insert the well charged good condition battery in the camera and try to turn on.

Please let me know any thing you found change or still same?

If its still same then its a problem of the camera shutter release buttons. That button make short on the circuit board and thats why its shut off. In that case you need to visit camera service center for repairing. Thank you.
