I own a Canon 350D...
I own a Canon 350D Digital SLR camera. When inserting CF card an error appears (CF error) and the camera is inoperable (Blank screen, shutter doesn't work, etc). This occurs with three different CF cards. The camera operates when no CFG card is used. I'd appreciate your advice on whether this fault is repairable.

Hi,

First, Use a flashlight and magnifier to look into the card slot to make sure that all of the pins are straight. A single bent pin will cause the problem that you are experiencing. Unless you possess exceptional skill this issue is not user repairable and will require professional service to replace the entire connector.

If the pins all appear to be ok, do a hard reset on the camera by removing the main battery, memory card, and the date battery using the information below. Once these have been removed, turn the camera to "ON" and allow it to sit for ten minutes. Turn the camera to "OFF", reinstall both batteries and the memory card and try it out. Please let me know the result.

The service below estimates $100 for the repair. Which is not bad for a camera that a good used replacement would still cost you over $300.

Checked the pins on camera and they were fine. Reseted the camera but still non-operable. We also reformatted the CF card which resulted with a message 'error 99'. The lens fitted is standard supply with the camera and has been operational with the camera until this fault occurred.

I look forward to your further advice.

While an 'error 99' message can sometimes be associated with a CF card issue, it usually indicates a communication error with the lens or shutter. Unfortunately, the error messages can become rather random if the problem is with the main circuit board. Clean the metal connectors on the lens and onthe camera body with a clean erase. Be careful to not allow the residue to fall into the mirror and sensor area.

 

By the way, what size (capacity in mb or gb) are the CF cards?

16 GB, 512Mb and 2Gb CF cards. Will clean contacts and revert back. Thanks.

The 16gb definitely will not work and can tend to put the camera's operating system in a loop.

The camera works properly without the CF card inserted. When the CF card is inserted (512MB) the camera becomes inoperable and displays an error message - 'Error CF'

The problem is that you have given multiple points of possible failure. If the camera suddenly displayed the "CF error" while using a 512mb card that had consistently worked before, then the cause is either card corruption (fragmentation) or a camera internal failure.

If you at some point, before the failure attempted to use the 16bg card, and afterward the error showed there is a different line of reasoning.

I am leaning toward camera card circuit failure, but cannot be sure with knowing the order of use and the condition of each card when initially tried (new, used in this camera, stopped while writing to or downloading from card, or used in another camera).

All the cards are used. As mentioned the camera does not operate at all when either card is inserted. Only the CF error appears. When no card is used the camera seems to function properly.
