Try these two things first, check the "hot shoe" to make sure that the spring latch is not stuck down.....Then remove the main batteries, the memory card and the "date battery" (shown on page 265 of the manual) and allow the camera to sit idle for 10 minutes. This will completely reset the camera. Insert the batteries and memory card, power the camera up and test the flash. Please let me know the result.

we are on vacation and don't have the book : ( how doyou remove the date battery? I removed the batteries and memory card, left idle and still doesn't work! what do i do now?

If the full reset does not restore flash operation it is an indication that the flash tube, a connection to or a component on the main board has failed. The camera will need to be sent for service if this is the case.
