I am having trouble with...
I am having trouble with sound quality I'm getting with a Canon FS200. I'm recording interviews and have tried with both the built in mike and an Azden boom mike (SMX-10), which I've been told by the manufacturer should record beautifully at 10 feet. The recording level is very low with the external mike. This is on the uncompressed digital .mov files loaded into my Mac. Files are 2+ GB. I'm using the external mike because the sound quality with the built in mike has a lot of echo and hiss. and I don't expect good interview quality sound from such a built in mike on this small camera. If there's a recording level I can change for the external mike, I can't figure it out.Also, there is a lot of "noise" (hum/hiss) over the recorded voice.
Or if there's anything else that might help...
I've called many audio/video sources, and the mike manufacturer, and am stumped!
Am I pushing the limits of the camera too far?

Hi and thanks for asking your question.

 

Let me give you a few troubleshooting suggestions to help you out.

 

First is just some basics - make sure the mic has a properly inserted AAA battery (make sure it's not in backwards too).

 

Next - make sure the jack is seated all the way into the camera. A jack that doesn't plug in all the way would be a likely cause for hum/hiss.

 

Next, turn the audio level monitor ON in the menu of the camera so you can see the levels on the screen. Test the mic, while watching the levels. Do they register within the normal levels on the viewfinder? If so, then the problem is actually in the capturing and/or editing of the files.

 

Keep in mind that the external mic will not sound as loud as the on board mic. On board mics tend to be overly "hot".

 

Finally - if the levels are NOT normal when testing the mic, then test the mic on a friends camera. How did it perform on it? If it still performed poorly, then it is likely you have a faulty microphone. If it performed fine on another camera, then you may need to have the external mic jack checked on your camera.
