It sounds like you may have the camera in a manual mode, check your settings and make sure you have the camera set up correctly in an Auto mode... Do you have your manual? I can direct you to a copy you can download if you don't have one...

 

As for the display, do you mean that you can't review your photos through the display? If so then try pressing the DISP button to toggle between viewfinder and screen for playback. Don't forget the EOS 40D only allows you to view the images you want to take through the viewfinder and not via the display, the display is only used to display the the picture AFTER its taken...

That's what I thought, but it is in auto mode. And I know that I can't use the display to take the pictures, but it is not even working for viewing the pictures after or making adjustments on the menu, etc.

Oh dear, first lets try a power down reset (remove battery and recharge fully then replace)

 

Do you have your manual?

 

If no luck with the power reset we might have to reload the camera's firmware...

Okay, it is charging now. All I have to do to do a power reset is charge all the way and put back in?
I do have the manual, but not at the moment (I am out of state). When I put the battery back in, I'll let you know what happens, thanks for the help so far!

Yes, we want to have the battery removed completely and then replaced once fully charged...

 

Do you have access to good internet? If you have no luck with the reset then I will first direct you to your manual... Check your Liveview settings, it appears that the 40D does have a liveview mode that allows you to take pictures via the screen...

 

I checked the firmware update and it does not indicate any known issue with the screen or auto mode...

I'm not sure if my last message didn't go through, because I don't see it, so I will just send it again, just incase... :)

There was no luck with the charged battery :/

I don't have a fast internet connection, but it isn't too bad.

I located the manual online, but have not found it helpful, yet.

The same problems are still there... view finder is completely blurred and no display at all! (I know that I can't use the display as a view finder). But I can't even use it to see my pictures, or menu.

Is there a way to reset without the display?

Hi

 

Just check the AF/M switch on the lens is set to AF and not M...

What happens when you press the menu button, is there any display on the lcd screen at all?

 

Also as for the blurred viewfinder, have you tried adjusting the dioptric of the viewfinder?

 

Also I need to know which lens you are using...

I adjusted the dioptric and that fixed the viewfinder problem!
I am using the lens it came with: 28-135mm, ultrasonic, canon.

Now just the display problem and then my camera will be back to new! I have really no idea what could be wrong with it. Is there a button I might have wrongly pressed? I take very good care of this camera.

It sounds like your lcd may be faulty unfortunately...

Only a year and a half. And I keep it really safe, so that really stinks. There is no other possibility?

Sorry but there is not much else to try other than a reload of the firmware, I am not confident this will fix it but is worth a try and costs nothing:

Is the little screen on the top working correctly?

 

Is the camera taking a photo?

 

Nothing in the service bulletins, no recalls for this problem I am afraid...

Yeah, I actually used it for a photo shoot today. It works just fine, just the LCD display does not work. The little screen is working perfectly, also. If I reload the firmware what will it do? Will it possibly ruin anything? Thanks!

I would backup all your photos, just in case, but no it shouldn't cause any problems, just make sure you follow the instructions...
