I have a question about Mourning Doves. There was a pair of
There was a pair of doves that mated and laid 2 eggs in my backyard. I tried to stay away and let them be, but because their nest was near my backyard door, they were somewhat rattled every time we passed by. Nevertheless, they got used to us and continued to care for their eggs. The eggs finally hatched and the chicks were growing healthy and big for the last 2-3 weeks. The mom and dad finally left the nest but stayed nearby and continuously looked after their 2 chicks from about a 20 feet distance. Last night, I accidentally startled the 2 chicks (neither the mom or dad were nearby at the time) and the chicks both flew away (FOR THE FIRST TIME). I haven't seen them all morning. The mom and dad are in their usual spot and I suspect they are wondering where their chicks went. I am devastated!! I feel that I prematurely startled the chicks and god knows where they went and the doves are now mourning their loss. I just want to know if I did this or would the chicks have flown away sooner or later anyway. There is nothing I can do now, but pray that they find each other, but I am truly devastated for the parents. Will the chicks return? Can they call onto one another? What will happen to them? … read more
