How much sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) did Maggie ingest and how much does she weight, please? When ingested it acts as a quick acting antacid.

Ask Your Own Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
She probably ate like a tablespoon and also a little more mixed with water and she drank most of the water my six-year-old goddaughter mixed it for her
Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Don't give it a second thought if she weighs more than 10 lbs. How much does she weigh, please?

Ask Your Own Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
OK I don’t understand what that means is she going to be OK she weighs 14 pounds
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Can you please call me
Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

At 14 lbs would have needed to ingest over 3 tablespoons of baking soda to have been intoxicated. She only ingested a tablespoon plus a little more with water. There's no need to induce emesis or treat in any manner. Please respond with further questions or concerns.

I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.

I don’t believe it was 3 tablespoons seriously but she did drink the water where a lot of the stuff was in it could be close to that what can we do if this seems to be have an affect on her should we do something now? Or what
Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

There's no specific antidote. Toxicity is evidenced by vomiting, diarrhea, depression, lethargy, tremors, seizures, shortness of breath, and/or disorientation within 3 hours of ingestion but I don't expect that you're going to see any of those symptoms. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

OK last question what do I do if I start to see any of those symptoms what can we do for her At that point is it too late or what would be the action we should take?
Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

She would need the attention of an on-call vet who would hook her up to an IV line, measure her acid-base balance, and treat accordingly. There's no home care at this time. The baking soda has already been neutralized by the acid in Maggie's stomach.

I have to leave my computer for the night. If you need help later, please ask for a second opinion. There's no extra cost for you to speak to another expert.
