We are after a second opinion. We are seeking a second
We are seeking a second opinion regarding the recent passing of our dog, Nunki, and would appreciate your insights. If you need any additional information to provide a more informed assessment, we're happy to share further details.Nunki had been experiencing chronic vomiting/regurgitation over a 6-month period. While she retained most of her food, she frequently regurgitated small amounts—typically foam. In January, she was hospitalized due to a significant decline in her condition. We were only recently informed that the diagnosis at the time was aspiration pneumonia. Fortunately, she made a full recovery, though episodes of regurgitation continued to recur intermittently. After months of trying various management strategies with limited success, it was recommended that we proceed with diagnostic imaging to investigate further. She was admitted on a day case for an abdominal ultrasound, which came back unremarkable. It was then decided to proceed with X-rays, for which Nunki was deeply sedated.During this sedation, no intubation was performed. Nunki regurgitated during the procedure, leading to suspected aspiration. Following this event, her condition deteriorated rapidly. She passed away within 24 hours. We were informed that intubation was initiated after the aspiration event had already occurred. Our concerns are:Given Nunki's history of chronic vomiting/regurgitation, would the decision to deeply sedate her without intubation be considered a deviation from standard practice? We are trying to understand:Whether failing to intubate in this context would typically be regarded as not a proper protocol for Nunki, and To what degree the aspiration event could have been anticipated or even prevented under accepted veterinary guidelines. We are not seeking to place blame, but we do want clarity on whether appropriate precautions were taken given her known risk factors.Thank you for your time and any professional insight you can offer. … read more
