Rabbit won't eat and may have blockage of carpet fibers! Gave pineapple juice twice yesterday and it didn't help. Do I continue with it or go to vet?
Hello, I'm Dr Gary. I've been practicing veterinary medicine since 2007. I look forward to helping with your questions/ concerns.

If you think there is an obstruction, then you really should get to a vet. Obstructions will need to be treated surgically to remove them.

As long as he's not obstructed, we can often treat these guys with syringe feedings and pro-motility meds. I'll use a product called Oxbow Critical Care. It's a powdered recover food that you can syringe feed every 2-4 hours until they're eating on their own. I'll also use a pro-motility drug, Metoclopramide/ Reglan, to help get the gut moving more normally.

Lastly, I would probably want to get some fluids in him if he seems dehydrated. This may be done under the skin (sub Q) if he's not all that dehydrated or IV if he's clinically showing signs of dehydration.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

He has had some kale so I think that is a good sign.

Continuing the pineapple juice won't hurt will it?

what are signs of obstruction?

That's good that he ate some for you. You can continue the pineapple juice and pick up some Oxbow Critical Care over the counter if you want to try some more from home.

If he's obstructed, we would see lack of appetite, lethargy and often severe abdominal pain on palpation of his abdomen. We also see lack of stool production.
