fevers are starting, diarrhea, lethargic, loss of appetite, mucous, runny noses

Hi there,

Cipro is not a great drug to use due to eye (retina) problems in cats.

Keflex can be used, 30mg/kg every 12 hours.

I hope this information helps!

ok, thanks! I have it in capsule form (500mg tablets) Would you recommend diluting into water, etc., then giving it orally by oral med syringe? or would there be a better option using the capsules?
Veterinarian: CriticalCareVet, ER/ICU Specialist replied 6 years ago
Hi there,

It would be better to get the suspension (liquid formulation) from the veterinarian as it will be very hard to get an accurate dose with dilution.

our vet retired here about 6 months ago. I live on a ranch in western South Dakota, so the nearest vet is about 1 1/2 hours away, and the earliest I can go there would be Monday, I'm sure my cats will be dead by then. Is there any direction you could give me to at minimum, get them by by dillution until Monday when I can get something from a vet? thanks so much for your help!!!
Veterinarian: CriticalCareVet, ER/ICU Specialist replied 6 years ago
Hi there,

If needed - you can break the capsule open into a specific amount of water.

For example - if you dilted 500mg into 5ml of water it would be 100mg/ml.

The dose above is 30mg/kg.

If a 5kg cat needs 30mg/kg, it is 150mg.

You would then need to give 1.5ml of the solution above.

thank you so much!!!! it might be easier for them to want to drink milk, would that be ok instead?
Veterinarian: CriticalCareVet, ER/ICU Specialist replied 6 years ago
Water would be better than milk with medication efficacy.
