My female soft coated wheaten terrier dog who is 7 years old started vomiting red foamy fluid a few hours ago. She was boarded with a new person last night. There’s no diarrhea, but is quiet and mildly lethargic.

JACustomer:

Yes, her gums are pink.

Expert:

Good. It sounds like she may have some GI upset possibly from eating something that she is not used to eating. Of course, it would be best for her to be seen by a vet, in the meantime you can try giving NO food or water for 12 hours since she last vomited. You can also give pepcid. What does she weigh?

JACustomer:

About 30 lbs

Veterinarian: Dr. Jenn, Veterinarian replied 7 years ago

Expert:

Give 1 tablet of Pepcid ac 10mg. You can repeat the dose every 8-12 hours if needed. After the fast you can feed a small amount of bland boiled chicken and rice and offer a small amount of water. If she keeps it down, you can offer more a few hours later, slowly increasing her back to a normal amount of food. You can feed this for a few days then slowly change her back to her regular dog food. If the vomiting continues she really should be examined by a vet.

JACustomer:

Thanks. She's had a sensitive stomach in the past and we use that diet. Haven't tried the Pepcid before. We were concerned about the pink and thought it might be more serious. Anything we should watch for?

Veterinarian: Dr. Jenn, Veterinarian replied 7 years ago

Expert:

The pink may be a bit of blood-this can happen when they vomit with a lot of effort. If she continues to vomit, becomes more lethargic, or if her gums become pale get her in. There may be an emergency clinic in your area.
