my guinea pigs eye is closed shut, it is a little crusty around

Resolved Question:

my guinea pig's eye is closed shut, it is a little crusty around the edges. Her only change recently is a friend gave us some home grown hay to eat. Any ideas?

This is not likely from the home grown hay. Just like dogs and cats, guinea pigs can get scratches to the cornea and conjunctivitis which are the two main causes of this squinting and discharge.

The way we differentiate is by staining the front of the eye- if it takes up stain then it's an ulcer. If not, then it's conjunctivitis.

An ulcer is treated with topical antibiotic drops. Conjunctivitis is treated with topical steroids.

In the meantime, you can place a rewetting saline eye drop in the eye every 4-6 hours to keep the cornea moist and healthy.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
