I had to take my 9-year old house cat to the vet this morning. His symptoms started last night - he refused to eat and use the litter box. After a while he urinated in the box and then ate. This morning, the symptoms persisted and he has staying away from people (highly unusual). The vet did an x-ray and found a mass in his intestine -- not a full obstruction. (It looks like a mass than air pocket than mass). The vet also did a series of blood work (waiting for results). Based on some online research I am beginning to fear it may be cancer. What do you think?

Hi there.

There is a possibility that this partial mass could be a cancer lesion but this would be rare. Cancer lesions in cats digestive tract are usually intestinal lymphoma which is invasive but do not appear as a mass. Most likely this is a partial hair ball mass that could be removed surgically if your vet cannot get this to move other wise.

Good Luck!!

Thank you for your quick and reassuring reponse. What does intestinal lymphoma look like?

It does not look any different than the intestinal tract since it is invasive. It can only be diagnosed by biopsy. You can at least be sure this is not the mass that is seen on the xray.

Cats that are older are more prone to hair masses because their digestive tract does not work as well as when they were younger to move the hair through.

have a Great day!!
