I have a 7 year black labrador who has been having trouble…

Customer Question
I have a 7 year...
I have a 7 year black labrador who has been having trouble with her ears, one more so than the other, it normally starts during the night with her shaking her head and eyes constantly, she becomes quite distressed and pants alot - this can happen one night and she can be fine for upto a week and then it happens again - having checked her ears they dont seen hot, scratched or have any unusal oders. This happened last night and resulted in very slight bleeding to her ear. However after bathing and given her a painkiller (perscriped) she is more settled this morning.

Could this be hayfever or other allergies?

Hello, I'm Dr. Bob.
You are absolutely correct in connecting the ear problem with allergies. Something like 80% of ear problems are allergy related.
A dog's ear canal is very long compared to a human's, and beside that, it's "L" shaped.
Your girl could have something going on deep in her ear canal that is not visible from the outside.
You can obtain an ear cleaner from your veterinarian, and you should clean her ears weekly. This will help prevent problems. Olive oil can be used as a home remedy to clean ears.
Benedryl given at 0.5 mg/kg or 1 mg/lb, would be an excellent over the counter medication to use with her.
If she's a swimmer, a mixture of 1/2 rubbing alcohol and 1/2 vinegar is helpful in preventing problems.
If you should have further questions, please let me know.
