Customer Question
Dear Sirs: My 14...
Dear Sirs: My 14 year old dog has been diagnosed with CHF. He still is active and goes for short walks to barn in am. He was on Beta Blockers and I have a cough medicine for him. My husband lost his job and we are on limited budget. I have given him 1/2 baby aspirin. I notice a article on this site that mentions Lasix. I have Lasix and so does my husband. How many Mg. could I give him? Caroline

Hello, I'm Dr. Bob.
The dose of Lasix is 1-4 mg/kg given every 6 - 24 hours.
The only problem you may have using your own Lasix is breaking it down to a small enough dose, but the safe range is quite wide, so you may be able to make it work.
If you live in an area close to a WalMart or a Kroger store, you may be able to use their low cost drug program. Our local stores have accommodated my clients and their pets. Depending on which beta blocker he's on, may get that there as well, if your veterinarian doesn't mind writing a prescription, and the laws in your region allow this practice.
If you should have further questions, please let me know.

Dear Sir: I can take care of Lasix. , but vet wants me to bring Teddy back so I,m out of beta blockers. You did not say if half of 81mg of aspirn would help or harm him. its Bayer Aspirin. We can not afford $90.00 right now. I worked with family practice doctor and she use to give her animals Aspirin. If you can't say either way I will understand. I will start him on 1mg of Lasix. He only weighs around 12-15lbs my husband estimated. Thanks for your help. Caroline

Fire your husband as a medication calculator! ;0)
He should get at least 1 mg per kg (that's 1 mg per 2.2 pounds), so the proper dose would be in the about 5 to 20 mg range.
The half baby aspirin is fine, and shouldn't cause any problems with the other medications, but it may not really be of much use either. He could take up to half of a full-sized adult aspirin every 6 - 8 hours with no problem.
The beta blocker is important, if you can swing it, I would definitely recommend keeping him on that.
Most veterinarians are pretty soft-hearted people, and if you explain your situation, yours may try to help by reducing their fee for you. Of course, they may not as well.
If I may be of further assistance to you, please let me know.
Best regards,
Dr. Bob
