Hi and thanks for the query,
Most likely it was caused by inflammation on a rough or dry inflamed surface like if you shaved your hair, vaginal fluids can irritate the inflamed or rough skin causing transient burning, other causes are fungal infection but it remains and does not go away on its own. I would suggest you should apply a lubricant or lotion on your skin to avoid dryness or roughness and if it happens again you should get tested for STDs along with your wife.
