VerifiedGenerally yes but it is difficult for me to say without examining him. What caused him to be given the diagnosis of phimosis? Can his foreskin be retracted at all or is his glans hidden? Is he having infections or inflammation (often referred to as balanitis)? In children younger than your son who present with mild phimosis steroid cream can help loosen up the phimotic ring (scar tissue) and sometimes can avoid circumcision. But understand that as kids get older their skin changes and steroid cream is not likely to do the trick for more severe phimosis or a thick scar tissue band. If you are really against circumcision another option would be a dorsal slit where the foreskin is incised through the phimotic ring but not removed. This is not preferable and honestly I wouldn't recommend it (and your urologist may not agree to it), but it is conceivably an option. It would very likely leave the penis cosmetically displeasing. I think the best idea is to have an open and honest discussion with your urologist regarding the need for circumcision in your son and your apprehension or desire not to circumcise. This should help clear things up and help you feel comfortable with your ultimate decision either way. Having seen many kids with phimosis (but not your child), I can tell you that circumcision is almost always the best and only option. I hope this helps you.
