Q1 I am a sole...

Q1 I am a sole trader private tutor of pupils aged 8- 12. I work from home and employ no other tutors or staff. If my turnover for the last 12 months exceeds the vat threshold do I need to pay vat or am I exempt?
Q2 I plan to expand next year and to continue to tutor myself but to emply some other tutors. At which time I will no doubt have a turnover above the threshold. Would I then be liable for VAT?

As a commercial provider of education with a view to making and distributing profits, you are unlikely to be an eligible body to get VAT exemption.

You will find information in VAT Notice 701/30 helpful (see sec 2.4). Here is a link to it.

The treatment of private tuition is covered in Sec 6....

If you as a teacher are a sole trader and the the subject covered is one taught regularly in a number of schools the it is an exempt supply of private tuition.

If you take on other teacher(s) to help you then the tuition that others deliver is standard -rated.

If your turnover exceeds the VAT threshold then you should register for VAT.
