yes it does - what would a motorised valve look like - there is a silver box with an arm sticking out of it

it says auto one one side and main open on the other its closer to auto but i have no difficulty moving it

Not stiff at all but does not feel particularly loose it just moves across easily

I put it back to auto - should I move it to main open and see what happens

If you push it and latch it then you should get heating when your hot water is on?

ah thats a problem it won't stay in the up position is keeps dropping back to where you slide it

If it is a silver box then once you flick it open then there is a place to latch it open behind the catch before it springs back?

its a sliver box but I have not opened it the arm is sticking out the front so I can just move it from there - how do I open it - it does not appear to have any point to open

The valve is open when you push the lever across.
If you look where the lever is coming out of there is a catch at the end of the slot you can latch the lever behind

there is a point which comes down between the two ends - the latch looks like it should catch behind it but it just drops back into the main slot runway

You have to hold it in the place until the spring pulls it back into the slot

how long do you have to hold it for just held it for over a minute but it won't stay there - can I check I am supposed to hold it on the side that says main open?

Ok, it should be open anyway when the heating i on.
You will need to get someone to replace the head to fix this.

It was only fixed today! nothing to do with the valve in the airing cupboard - issues inside the boiler and the timer but happy to pay the additional £8 as I did manage to get the heating to come on all be it periodically by waggling the arm in the silver box thanks to you
