Hi Rick

We have a Megaflow system that has recently started making very loud scudding/scraping/banging noises. The noises seem to come from the tank and seem to be relatively random, but they are becoming more frequent. The Central Heating is off, the hot water is on.

The Model is a CL 250. Don't have the Gas Council number.

Ah sorry misunderstood thought this was a Baxi megaflow gas boiler, when it is a Heatrae Sadia electric tank heater, I will opt out as I have had no dealings with these, Rick

I left a bag sealed over the discharge pipe overnight and the bag is completely dry. The loud "hammer" noise was there again today, but we've only noticed it when the hot water is on.

Heating. Noises don't occur at the same time the water is running. Points to a sticky valve?

It could be the 2 port valve on the heating pipework that feeds the cylinder. Can you put your hand on it and see if you can feel it banging?

Ok, not all the time then. It could be the motor breaking down so the spring will keep trying to shut the valve?

The 2-point valve (a Drayton ZA5) is where the noise is coming from. When the valve closes it makes the noise but not all the time. Sometimes is closes softly. When I open and close the valve manually is is about 50-50. The thing is, the valve is fairly new (6 months). Maybe it is faulty?

It sounds faulty.
If the pump does not shut off when the valve closes then you will get a bang as it closes against the pressure.
It depends how it has been wired because if the boiler has a pump overrun then the pump continues after the boiler has shut off?

The pump does have an overrun. But surely this does not mean that I should expect a noise under the pressure? I would have thought that the valve was built to operate under that pressure. Must be faulty. But why would it take so long to reveal the fault?

A hard one to answer without being there.
Perhaps the motor that holds it open is failing and so is closing when it should still be on and closing against the pump when on and therefore the pump has nowhere to pump to?
