Hi, I have a problem...

Hi, I have a problem with the CH red egg timer light coming on causing the rooms not to reach temperature but no problem with the DHW.. This has been intermittent until last week. Also the red reset light comes on occasionally and I have to reset it. I had a new venture and some other part which cost me £400 last year. I am short of money at the moment and I had a GSI out last week who just shook his head and said these Ferrolli Falcon 2 boilers are poor quality and he could install a new Baxi for £1500 which I'm afraid I don't have at the moment. If I could get him back with a solution from you I'm hoping it would cost less. thanks Mark

Hi my name is Brian,
I have been in the Plumbing & Heating trade for approximately 15 years,
lets see if i can help. I apologise no one has been able to help with this question, The two faults that relate to your red flashing light are either system pressure is low, but if you have had your repairman look at it I would not think this is the case, or the diverter valve is faulty, when the problem was intermittent did this happen after you had the DHW running by any chance, if yes then I think thats more than likely to be the fault.

Hi Brian,

The system pressure is at 1.5bar at no load and rises to 2 bar with load.

As I understand it that is correct. It does happen after the DHW is used but it always has a moment before the CH kicks in on this boiler but it is still intermittent now, just not reaching the room stat temp required because the flame is on for varying amounts of time from 30 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes, once the red egg timer light comes on the water is still being pumped around the system but obviously its pumping cold water which then cools the rads????

Hi Mark. Yes system pressure is fine.
This fault is quite hard to diagnose without being there when it happens but, I would suggest its the diverter valve thats faulty as its not switching over from DHW to heating properly, when this happens the flame is still heating the water in the boiler but the valve has not switched over to divert to the radiators or perhaps only partially switched over, hence the flame not staying on for long and also the overheat lockout sometimes.

After spending £400 last year I to would be reluctant to change the boiler even if the money was available, I don't know if your plumber is tried and trusted but maybe a hands on second opinion would be money well spent.

I am sorry I cant help you with a definitive answer to your problem this time. I can if you wish open the question back up and maybe someone else can shed a little more light on the problem or I can send this to a moderator and they will cancel the question for you.

Thanks for your reply Brian, I will take your advice and get a second opinion as the last GSI was quite young and only took the front off the boiler and suggested a new one.
