VerifiedHi I am Rick, UK Plumber, and I specialize on Boiler problems, this noise is caused by pipes rubbing against timber joists/floorboards etc as the pipes expand and contract and as you have found can be quite loud, the cure is to place some hair felt between the pipes and the wood, this could mean the floor boards being lifted again, but if it had been done on installation you would not have the problem now, you need to get the installer back, Rick
the size of the pipes has little bearing on expansion noise, it down to purely what they are rubbing against, even pipe clips can cause the noise if the pipe is under any kind of strain, another point to look for is the radiators, most today are supplied with plastic bushes that go on the brackets, but many plumbers can not be bothered to fit them, also I have had a bad radiator that has not been spot welded properly and made noises as it heated and cooled, Rick
