My ex partner convinced...

My ex partner convinced me to change my car to the one she wanted to me to have. I exchange my car for another car. My ex partner paid through a bank transfer from her account a deposit of 7000 so that my monthly payment towards the car could be affordable. My ex partner told me that is what a relationship is all about. Now that I do not want the relationship anymore, my ex partner is telling me to pay her the money she put paid for the deposit of the car. The car is on my name, and I am the one paying for the monthly rate for the car. I told my ex partner before she got the car that it was too expensive for me, but she said we will pay the car off together in no time. Now I am left with an expensive car to manage and have to pay it all on my own then pay her the money she put in as deposit. What should I do.

I pay for the car monthly through a car finance company/ car credit loan. I will like to keep paying the car for the number of years on the car credit agreement. I had a car before the relationship which I was paying with a car credit company and I still had 3 years to pay but my ex convinced me to exchange it for the car the settlement figure and then she put in money to clear the settlement figure that was left and the rest as a deposit for monthly rate to not be too high. I need a car to go to work. So I want to keep the car. Plus I can't hand the car back to the car credit company and if I want to sell the car, the value will be low and will not be able pay off the settlement figure for it, not to talk of having another car.

It doesn’t matter whose name the car is in on the DVLA V5. The only proof of ownership would be a finance document and it appears that the finance is in your name so you are the owner..

As it is, it seems that she paid GBP7000 towards the car and you paid however much your car was worth.

So either you buy her out or she buys you out.

Legally, you own the car you owe the money that she put into it.

If you can’t afford or don’t want to pay it and you can’t afford to pay her out, then the only remedy is to sell the car and divide the proceeds in the same proportions that you put money in. I fully appreciate you may not get that much for it if you sell it but that’s a problem that you and her would have to face. You would lose a lot of money.

If she issues court proceedings you are going to have to defend them.
