The short answer is that it depends what the contract says on this point. Sometimes they do demand notice in writing. If so, you could argue that is an unfair term and so void under UCTA as verbal notification places them in a position where they know your position.
Also, if they filled her place then there is no claim against you anyway as that would be double compensation which they are not allowed to do. Often independent schools keep a waiting list so it is possible that they were not caused loss by this.
You need to get access to your original contract. A term's notice is very common and reasonable. Whether it should be in writing depends.
